What Does your Birthstone Mean?

It is agreed by most scholars that the birth of birthstones can be traced back to the breastplate of Aaron described in the Bible in the book of Exodus. Each stone represented one of the 12 tribes of Israel.

Over time, the stones became associated with the twelve signs of the zodiac, which correspond with the months of the year. The custom of wearing birthstones became popular in Poland in the 16th century. It is said that certain personality traits have been associated with each stone and the person whose birth month is represented by that gem.

Many of the birthstones have remained the same since its birth but others have changed slightly. In 1912, the American National Association of Jewelers declared a modern list of birthstones that have been unchanged since.
