If you were born in February, the amethyst is your birthstone.
This gorgeous purple-hued gem was believed by ancient Romans and Greeks to ward off intoxication. It was believed to help the person who wore it stay quick on her feet and clear-headed.
England’s king and queens during the Middle Ages also loved the amethyst, decorating their clothing and crowns with it (which is how the color purple has become associated with royalty).
While it looks purple, the amethyst actually is a blend of violet and red and, while the gemstone is found all over the planet, the finest of these stones originally were found in Russia (Brazil is the main source of amethysts today).
The color purple also is associated with passion, although the amethyst is believed to keep passion tamped and worries minimal.
